VP Records Joins Reggae Genealogy to Celebrate Jamaican Music History

VP Records is honored to be part of Reggae Genealogy, a Reggae Month event on Sunday, February 2, 2025, from 4:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m., at Island SPACE Caribbean Museum, Broward Mall, South Florida. This annual event explores the history of Jamaican music through live performances, storytelling, and cultural exhibitions, including the Peter Simon Reggae Bloodlines Exhibit, a celebrated collection of photographs capturing reggae’s most influential artists and moments.

Produced by Island SPACE Caribbean Museum, Reggae Genealogy transforms the venue into an interactive showcase of Jamaican music’s evolution. The evening will feature a live musical timeline covering genres such as mento, ska, rocksteady, reggae, and dancehall, with performances by Ernie Smith, Eric “Monty” Morris, Wayne Armond, Ambelique, Shuga, and Bobby Rose. A special tribute set by Jerry Maytals & The Original Maytals Band will honor the legacy of Toots Hibbert. The event will also highlight reggae’s influence on global genres likedub, pop, reggaeton, and Afrobeats, featuring DJ sets by Walshy Fire (Major Lazer), DJ GQ (Y100), and DJ Mekka Don (Tu 94.9). Additionally, Inner Circle, Wayne Wonder, and producer Donovan Germain will receive Lifetime Achievement Awards for their contributions to reggae.

The Peter Simon Reggae Bloodlines Exhibit, previously displayed at VP Records’ community space in New York, will be a key part of the experience, offering attendees a rare visual journey through reggae history. Simon’s photography captures intimate moments of artists such as Freddie McGregor, Big Youth, Dennis Brown, and Lee ‘Scratch’ Perry, preserving the history and spirit of the music.

Attendees can enjoy food, shopping, and free museum tours before the performances begin at 6:00 p.m..

Tickets range from $25 (pre-sale) to $75 (VIP) and are available at www.reggaegenealogy.org.
