Tropicalfete’s June Authors Connecting Program Celebrates 10th Anniversary, Partners with VP Records and Brooklyn Public Library to Present Two Reggae Segments

RSVP to the Patricia “Miss Pat” Chin Event

Tropicalfete continues its celebration of the Authors Connecting program’s 10th anniversary with two reggae-focused events in partnership with VP Records and the Brooklyn Public Library.

On June 17, acclaimed British journalist and historian John Masouri made his only U.S. appearance at the Brooklyn Public Library to discuss Pressure Drop: Reggae in the Seventies, his latest book for Omnibus Press. Written over 18 months and informed by four decades of interviews, Pressure Drop offers a year-by-year account of reggae’s pivotal decade. It was recently nominated for the 2025 Penderyn Music Book Prize and has earned praise from critics including Randall Grass, John Robb, and the late Alex Wheatle.

Up next, on June 25, VP Records co-founder and Jamaican music matriarch Patricia “Miss Pat” Chin will reflect on her life and legacy in a discussion centered on her biography, Miss Pat: My Reggae Music Journey. Co-written with Anicee Gaddis, Alex Lee, James ‘Jazz’ Goring, and John Masouri, the book details her journey from Kingston’s Randy’s Record Mart and Studio 17 to founding VP Records in Queens, NY. It captures her decades-long influence on the growth of reggae and dancehall around the world.

Miss Pat’s work has earned her numerous accolades, including the Jamaican government’s Order of Distinction and a Lifetime Achievement Award from A2IM’s Libera Awards.

Both events are part of Tropicalfete’s broader effort to spotlight Caribbean authors and storytellers whose work enriches cultural understanding and preserves Caribbean heritage.

The June 25 Miss Pat event will be held at the Tropicalfete Cultural Landmark in Brooklyn from 7–9 PM and will be moderated by journalist and Tropicalfete board member Patricia Meschino. Admission is free with RSVP via Eventbrite.
